ROMANCE KIDS VERSUS REALITY MEN: Euro soccer preview

THIS WAS JUST AHEAD OF THE EURO FINAL ON JULY 1

I guess some of my friends know that I started my career in journalism as a sports commentator and sports correspondent....After a long lay off, I thought I would test how much of what I used to do then is till in me. The result: this preview of the euro-soccer final:

ROMANCE KIDS VERSUS REALITY MEN

SPAIN WRITE GOOD SOCCER PROSE BUT ITALY ARE THE ROMANTIC POETS

IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS

A FORMER SPORTSCASTER'S PREVIEW

( About half an hour ahead of the kick-off, this is my preview of the Euro final. As a former sports commentator and a genetic soccer enthusiast from Mahilpur, I find my head and heart into a familiar conflict. My heart says it needs be Italy but my head nods sideways. Here is my take .)

The form book is as agonising as toss of a flirt's head, or her "all-is-possible-but-nothing-promised" glance and smiles. Spain are unbeaten and haven't had a goal scored against them in the past four matches. But they haven't beaten Italy in the tournament, and they conceded a goal to them in their pool outing.

Its reality versus romance. Spain has reality on its side, but Italy can ride romance, something only they and Brazil know how to invoke . These two soccer nations, and to some extent France, can mesmerize us and their opponents with magic, weaving uncanny tapestries and patterns down both flanks, to provide a new surrealistic soccer architecture to an unsuspecting but grateful world.

Spain are tipped to win but Italy remain sentimental favourites and, for me, have a pack of dangerous floaters whose profile is seductively deceptive and destructive . On both sides, there are players who would write the real scrip of destiny but may not find a mention in tomorrow's headlines, For this, do not under estimate mid-field game making Italian Andrea Pirlo and the quiet defense ripper Spaniard,Andres Iniesta. A critical decision on the outcome of the match would be made before the kick-off: where would Italy play Rossi ? If they play safe -- which they may be tempted to if they allow themselves to be overawed by Spain's current form and reputation - then the Spaniards would have much to thank their opponents for. Italy must thrust Rossi as a match winner, rather than a game saver. Italy's best chance lies in this brilliant star being allowed to twinkle his toes, rather than use his sturdy frame as a blockade, which is a formidable asset but not enough to break the destiny code. Italy also must watch Xavi Hernandez, due for a return to form at the right time, and not be misled by his record in the tournament so far. Left free to find a release for his energies in the first fifteen minutes, this genius alone can spell doom for the Garibaldi's romantic gladiators.

Up in the cameos, Sergio Ramos will have to keep his eye clear against thte blinding glare of Mario Balotelli . The Italian striker is famed to possess magic that can melt an ice maiden's heart with his delectable on-field courting with a soccer ball. Spain must talk to the Germans to know how to stop the Italian Renascence artist from writing romantic soccer poetry in front of swooning millions on TV. "Spectacular" is the only word that comes to mind when you think of the way this man likes to reveal his destiny. The goal mouth suddenly turns into a willing maiden when he approaches with his chvalrous dance down the center.

Under the crosspiece stand two legendary giants, Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon . Of these, Buffon has reason to believe that the run of the drama and romance is poised his way, with 2006 world cup medal already adorning his lapel . But the world cup script can also begin with 2010 and put Casillas in dream boots. But either of these icons will need to crack only once, and the game could be over.

You are favoured to win, Spain, but this Italian side really enjoys doing the unpredictable. Mahilpur knows its soccer but would still be carrying Italians flags: you just can't argue against the poetry of romance.
