"The
stubborn haste of the believer to prove and of the non-believer to
disprove the existence of any force beyond the natural would be a
comedy by itself, if it did not involve violence on both sides. To be
fair, the non-believers, who have less philosophical reasons to be
virtuous and kind, have inflicted less violence on mankind than have
the preachers of mercy, love and human brotherhood in the name of God.
That does not prove either of them right or wrong in their convictions
about God but it does prove that the non-believers have been closer to
the religious ideals of compassion, tolerance and love than the
protagonists of these principles."
